A wellness lifestyle includes physical activity and healthful eating. In this class, students will learn about nutrition and the nutrients the body needs for energy, proper growth, body maintenance, and functioning. As high performance athletes, students will identify factors that influence their food selection toward maintaining a healthy weight and fitness level. They will learn about eating disorders and keep a personal eating/diet journal and learn to apply nutritional principles to their own lifestyle. Students will study the implications of overweight and obesity and successful weight management. Students will learn about carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, vitamins, minerals and water and how the body uses these according to age, gender, ethnicity, health, body image, and activity level.
