The Heritage Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted five new members and installed new officers on the evening of Tuesday, December 9, 2014. The ceremony was held at Heritage Academy in one of our classrooms. We had a wonderful violinist play several times throughout the ceremony. Several of our current NHS members spoke about the four pillars of membership; Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. After the ceremony we adjourned to the library for dinner catered by Kurama. The students really enjoyed the sushi, eating it all. The chapter officers cut and delivered pieces of cake to everyone to cap off the evening. I am happy to congratulate the new members and our new officers!
Today was Bluefish Dissection Day in marine biology class. We were fortunate to be joined by Ms. Doreen Kuenzler, Manager of the Seafood Department at Whole Foods Market. She brought us some fresh fish and helped with our lab. Now we all know that the gills should be removed before cooking a whole fish to keep it from tasting bitter and even better, she taught us how to do that. Here Doreen , Jim Ji, and Samuel Cudjoe celebrate a successful dissection….all parts accounted for.
The students in Mrs. Sklarin’s Precalculus class had fun today making graphs for the Trigonometry functions. They are learning about the unit circle and how it connects the Sine, Cosine, Tangent, along with the Seceant, Cosecant, and Cotangent. We explored how the graphs are created by moving along the unit circle with the “Wolfram CDF player.” We saw how changing the amplitude and period effects each graph. The students created the parent graphs of each function today making note the key features. We will continue to work on Trigonometry as the quarter progresses.
The students in Mrs. Sklarin’s geometry class had fun while exploring fractals and tessellations. They saw how math and nature are aligned with the Fibonacci numbers by counting pine cone spirals and petals on flowers. We discussed the golden ratio and how it is used in art. The recursive nature of the Fibonacci sequence inspired the interest in fractals. We created the trees, Sierpinski’s triangle, Pascal’s triangle, Koch’s curve and snowflake among others. Then we moved into tessellations.
The Heritage Academy chapter of the National Honor Society elected officers. The 2014 President is Will White, the Vice President is Will Miles, the Secretary is DJ Green, and the Treasurer is Brett Inserra. We would like to congratulate these wonderful students on accepting the responsibilities of being an officer.
Our New member induction and Officer Installation will be held on December 9th in the Library at 6:00 p.m.
