# Algebra 2 Explores Transformations in Graphing

Mrs. Sklarin’s Algebra 2 class utilized technology to explore transformations in graphing. The students used a TI-Nspire program to investigate how changing the coefficients and constants change the graph of a function. We were able to move the graphs around by changing one value at a time. The calculator did the heavy lifting and we got to see the immediate change appear The effect of that one change became apparent on all the different types of graphs. The students made connections between the location of each number and how the graph moved. (ex. y = a(x-h)^2 + k) Then we switched to student dry-erase boards and the students had to graph new functions using the transformations. We used most of the parent functions; y = x, y = x^2, y = x^3, y = square root (x), y = 1/x, and y = absolute value (x). To exit class each student had to write what each value did to change the graph.  The time flew by as we enjoyed the movement of the functions.on the screen.
