Government Students Take On the Abortion Debate

Abortion Debate

A debate on Abortion was held in Mr. Ted Zawacki’s Government class. Controversial topics centered on Roe vs. Wade, Religious Views, Extent of Abortion in the United States, Unwanted Pregnancies and the Role of Government. The Pro Life position was represented by Arthur Yeager and Nicholas Russell and the Pro Choice position was represented by Rhea Bhagia and Samuel Cochrane.

Olympics – It is all about the Data

Mrs. Sklarin’s statistics classes held their own version of the Olympics on Monday, Feb 23. Each student came up with an event idea that would last about a minute and could be described by a normal curve. They invited the other students in the school to come and take part in the events. It was a fun way to produce and collect data! We had several events to participate in including: paper plane flight, jump rope, paper ball basket, golf ball juggle, tennis ball juggle, volleyball bounce, popcorn move, raisin toss, candy box, pencil toss, write the numbers, press the button, and balloon float. The participants had fun competing in these unusual events and the statistics students had fun watching the data be created. The next step for the statistics students is to organize the data into a graph and describe it. Then they will calculate the statistics to go along with it and create the normal curve associated with their statistics. Winners, determined by z-score totals, will be announced on Friday, Feb 27.

Government Students Become "Founding Fathers"

Students in Ms. Hobson’s U.S. Government class formed three new states, writing constitutions and developing structures for national security, public education, voting, public services, and leadership.  Each new state had a national symbol and a national flag created by the group to represent their state.  Prior to this activity, each student created an original symbol represented of his/her own country, state, or home town!  Each group then evaluated its work and assigned the group a grade.  Student comments on what they learned about America’s Founding Fathers & running a government:  “It seemed almost impossible to think of everything needed to write a good constitution.”  “Yes, we learned some of the struggles our governments face on a daily basis.” “…there were different ideas on the way to deciding how the government should be structured and we learned how to compromise and agree on what we all thought was best.”

February's Advocate Group Meeting: Tolerance

On February 3, 2015, all Advocate Groups met to discuss Tolerance. Miss Hill’s class focused on tolerance by looking at stereotypes. Students participated in an activity where 10 statements were posted to the board. Each student received the face of a teenager (no students from Heritage Academy) and had to match the teenager to the statement. Students discussed the stereotypes behind the statements and if they were aware of them.

Students agreed that stereotypes can be uncomfortable to talk about, but it is a conversation that should be had. Stereotypes, or over-generalizations about a group of people, are quite hurtful. Each student wrote a statement in reference to stereotypes about their culture. The cover photo is a collage of those statements.

Government/Economics Students Study the Middle Class Squeeze


Karan Raj Bhasin presents his analysis of the Middle Class Squeeze and why it is harder to achieve the “American Dream.” He highlighted the importance of a vibrant Middle Class and the economic benefits derived from it.

Algebra 2 Explores Transformations in Graphing

Mrs. Sklarin’s Algebra 2 class utilized technology to explore transformations in graphing. The students used a TI-Nspire program to investigate how changing the coefficients and constants change the graph of a function. We were able to move the graphs around by changing one value at a time. The calculator did the heavy lifting and we got to see the immediate change appear The effect of that one change became apparent on all the different types of graphs. The students made connections between the location of each number and how the graph moved. (ex. y = a(x-h)^2 + k) Then we switched to student dry-erase boards and the students had to graph new functions using the transformations. We used most of the parent functions; y = x, y = x^2, y = x^3, y = square root (x), y = 1/x, and y = absolute value (x). To exit class each student had to write what each value did to change the graph.  The time flew by as we enjoyed the movement of the functions.on the screen.

Heritage Academy Competes at SCISA Math Meet

It was an early morning as the ten students from Heritage Academy boarded the bus to Sumter, SC for the 2015 SCISA High School Math Meet.  We fielded two teams this year having five students from the morning session and five students from the afternoon session. Sponsors Mrs. Sklarin and Mr. Bracken determined the two teams made up of students from both sessions. SCISA recognizes the member from each team with the highest score.  This year Will was recognized from Team 1 and Matais was recognized from Team 2. We are proud of them and all our students for their participation in this math competition. They represented Heritage Academy well.

Economics Stock Market Game


Stock Market BullEconomics students emerged as the leaders of Mr. Ted Zawacki’s Stock Market Game. The game taught a realistic approach to daily investing with it unpredictability and volatility. Twenty-three students were actively and enthusiastically engaged. Charles Spencer-White managed the highest return on his investments. He was followed closely by Alexander Vegh, Will White and Kyung Hwan Chung.
