## NHS Inducts New Members and Installs New Officers

The Heritage Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society held its Spring Induction and Officer Installation on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. The NHS is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious student recognition program. The standards of membership include scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Four students were selected by the Faculty Council for completing their candidacy and meeting all the standards of membership; Alex, Meredith, Gabriela, and Aniruddh. Our current officers conducted the Induction Ceremony while each chairmen took a turn to describe their standard of membership.

In addition, the installation of the new officers for the 2015-2016 school year was also conducted.  With a musical interlude by one of our talented middle school students, Amelie, we switched gears after the Induction Ceremony and conducted the Officer Installation. Several seniors acted as the Installing Officers for the ceremony. Each outgoing officer passed the candle to the new officer taking their position. Our new officers are:  President: Will, Vice-President: Jasmine, Secretary: Santiago, Treasurer: Brett.

We closed with our Head of School, Mrs. Shoemaker, congratulating the new inductees and new officers. Amelie played a final musical piece as the NHS members took their leave. Many members of the Heritage Academy staff were on hand to celebrate with these new members on achieving this wonderful honor. Pictures and sentiments of congratulations were offered as we wrapped up the event at the Hilton Head Island Public Library and made our way to New York City Pizza to enjoy dinner. It was a fun evening spending time with these wonderful students who demonstrate every day why they are a part of this prestigious organization.

## Probability and Simulation Fun in Statistics

The students in Mrs. Sklarin’s Statistics classes had fun with probability and simulation on Friday, April 24. We simulated a family of five with Skittles to see which combinations of boys and girls were most likely. We shook the Skittles and if they landed “S” up it was a girl. As expected two or three girls were the most often outcomes. Next we played a dice game with loaded dice. One had four nines and two zeros. The other die had four threes and two elevens. The students partnered up and chose a die then the highest roll won. They played several rounds to “run many trials.” With the collected outcomes the students identified the winning die. They calculated the actual probabilities to verify their simulation results. But the fun was not over yet. Lastly, we investigated why we really buy cereal. I proposed that it was to acquire the red guitar hidden inside the cereal box for my nephew Blake. With 6 colors available, I asked the students to determine how many boxes I would expect to buy to get the desired red guitar. We used a regular die to simulate each purchased box. When they determined the number of boxes for the red guitar, my nephew changed his mind and now wanted all six guitars; one of each color.

## Research Paper and Library Field Trip

All World Literature students are required to submit a research paper in MLA format.   The topic of each paper is a Nobel Prize winning author or poet.  Students will research their biographies, the culture of their country, and their literary achievements.  Students recently visited the Hilton Head Island Library to learn how to use their online Discus research resources.  The Discus research capabilities allow students online access not only to encyclopedias and biographies but also to magazine and newspaper articles.  The rough draft of research papers are due Monday, May 4.  The final draft of the research papers are due, Monday, May 18.  Power Point presentations on the research paper findings will be presented in class the week beginning Monday, May 25.

## Spirit Week Twin Day is a hit!

## ESL History Students Study Mali

Mrs. Butterworth’s ESL World History Students polished their geography skills by locating important places in the kingdom of Mali! This was a challenging assignment involving research, writing and drawing. Each student did an outstanding job!

## Pennies for Patients – Pizza Parties!

We are happy to celebrate with our “Pennies for Patients” winning classes! Mr. Costaksis’ 3rd block and Mr. Powell’s 6th block classes earned the honor of collecting the most change, over \$100 each. Their prizes are a Pizza Party and a Bronze Champion Banner!  The generosity of our students will shine on through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as they continue their mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and melanoma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. We want to thank the whole school for giving a total of \$840.47 for the cause.  Way to go Heritage Academy!

## Algebra 2 Students Hard at Work Before the Heritage Golf Tournament

The students in Mrs. Sklarin’s Algebra 2  class, the Wednesday before the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament, found themselves working hard. They completed the lesson and the homework. To celebrate, I gave them each a challenge problem to complete on the board. They met the challenge and still had a smile.  I hope they enjoy the golf tournament.

## Trigonometry in the Precalculus Classroom

The students in Mrs. Sklarin’s Precalculus class have started their unit on Trigonometry.  After memorizing the unit circle the students are starting on the graphs of the trigonometric functions. We enjoyed discussing the differences and similarities of each function as we graphed them all on our whiteboards. Then each student chose a function to graph on butcher paper to post on the wall. We had a great time creating our masterpieces.
